My fitness journey has been a revelation. I have discovered the side of myself which I truly did not believe was there. Since June 2025, making sure I am always bettering myself, bettering my mind, my daily habits, and pursuing daily goals.

But now I’m stuck, placed in a weird spot when it comes to my fitness journey. Over the past couple of months, I have struggled to find a true goal. I initially wanted to just make sure I continue living a healthy lifestyle, being able to look at myself in the mirror and be proud of the progress made. Now that I have reached our goal. What next?

Yes, going to the gym is always going to be an incredibly good habit. But for me, truthfully speaking, going to the gym without a true purpose and drive to achieve something feels empty. It almost feels like a chore, a point where you feel complacent.

A French philosopher named Michel de Montaigne once said, “Life without purpose leaves one lost, being everywhere yet nowhere.”

Going to the gym will always be a constant in my life. It’s helped me to discover things like self-confidence, breaking limits, and the art of consistency. This leads me to the all-important question: bodybuilding, or powerlifting?

Two separate sports that require true patience, persistence, and dedication to the craft. Some may think it is extreme, but I pride myself now on reaching new heights I never thought I could. Bodybuilding focuses on sculpting your body through focus and consistency to transform it into something it has never been before.

That is not even to talk of the dieting, the supplements, and the posing practice you must do before competing in these bodybuilding competitions. It is an entire process, a journey, something that has an end goal.

You then look at power lifting, a sport which requires patience and power. That chase to build strength is an addiction; the feeling of doing a heavy lift is extremely hard to beat.

The three compound lifts of squats, deadlifting, and bench press, it’s very easy to rush for those PRs, but that’s where the patience becomes incredibly crucial in your pursuit of strength. Rushing leads to injury, injury leads to self-doubt, and self-doubt leads to failure.

Over the past few months on the Beyond the Pitch podcast, I’ve had the opportunity of speaking to both a power lifter and a bodybuilder. Both are actively grinding in their fields. And both are aiming to break limits.

However, for me, powerlifting is calling my name. For the past month, I’ve been fighting myself about what I should choose, what I will enjoy more. After doing sessions of deadlifts, bench press and squats, it’s evident that I have a true passion for chasing strength.

For anyone who is going through a similar phase, always remember to ask yourself, ponder on what you’re truly trying to achieve. Once you have, stick to the plan and make sure you reach those goals that you set out for yourself. It’s still the same journey you’ve been on when it comes to your fitness; you’re just altering the destination and increasing the work ethic.
